Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Mar 27 – Apr 2

Motorola Moto E LTE - Black

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News’ regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post listing the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week’s Deal of the Week is Sprint Prepaid Motorola Moto E Android phone for 29.99 at Kmart online and in stores.

The 2nd gen Moto E LTE has got to be the best $30 phone ever, especially if you are into Amdroid development (aka rooting and ROMing). It runs Android Lollipop with a 1.2 Mhz quad-core Snapdragon 410 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal storage, a memory card slot, 4.5″ 540x960px screen, 5 MP main camera with autofocus and a VGA front facing camera. The Sprint Prepaid Moto E’s bootloader can be unlocked, it’s easily rootable and several 3rd party Marshmallow ROMs are available.

As long as its never been activated on Sprint Prepaid, the Moto E can be activated on most Sprint MVNOs. I’m using one on a RingPlus free plan.

Other especially good prepaid deals this week include:

Prepaid Operator Profile: RingPlus

ringplus-logo

This is one in a series of Prepaid Phone News’ series of comprehensive US prepaid mobile operator profiles. These profiles cover all the major US mobile operators’ prepaid plans as well as MVNOs which offer a good value.

Overview: RingPlus Wireless is an ad-supported freemium Sprint mobile virtual mobile operator (MVNO) that launched in August, 2013. RingPlus says its goal is to provide free ad-supported cell phone service. Currently RingPlus offers a mix of free and paid plans, all of which are supported by audio advertising that plays instead of the normal ring back tone before the called party answers.

Technology: CDMA voice and 1xRTT and 3G EVDO data on the 800 and 1900 Mhz bands. LTE on bands 25 (1900), 26 (850) and 41 (2500).

RingPlus Wireless Plans:

Promotional Free Plans: RingPlus is best known for its promotional free plans which are mainly offered to new users or current users activating new lines of service. The promotions are brief, lasting anywhere from a few hours to a few days, The promotional plans are RingPlus’ best free plans and generally include anywhere from 1000 to 3250 minutes, texts and MBs of data per month for “free”. Many free plans also require you post a link or message about RingPlus on Twitter, Facebook or the RingPlus Forum. In spite of being called  “free”, the promotional plans typically require an initial top up of $10 to $25 “to cover overages”. However, there are no or other charges unless you use up your account balance on overages and paid features like MMS or international calls.

See our RingPlus Promo Tracker for a regularly updated list of current RingPlus free plan promotions.

Non-Promotional Plans: RingPlus always has a bunch of non-promotional plans available. These are mostly paid plans but there are a few freebies too. RingPlus tends to change their plan lineup often. The current set has been around for over four months so they are probably due for a change soon.

2 Auto top up is charged at activation (added to plan balance) and whenever the account balance reaches zero. The balance is used to cover overages at 2¢/minute, text or MB of data and for extra cost items and services (see list below.)

  • Only one free plan is allowed per physical user, multiple free lines on the same account are OK as long as used by different people.
  • If a phone on a free plan is deactivated it can’t be reactivated on another free plan for 30 days.

Data Rounding: Based on my experience, RingPlus does not round data, customers are charged for the exact amount of data used.

Switching Plans: You cam switch plans using the Upgrade Plan option in your My RingPlus dashboard. When changing from one free plan to another free plan you must choose the upgrade at “Next Billing Cycle” option, immediate changes between free plans are not permitted.

WiFi Calling: RingPlus offers FluidCall which lets customers use any SIP client to make VOIP calls over WiFi using their RingPlus number. Calls made with FluidCall are free on plans priced at $19.99 and up (except the data only Rembrandt plan). On other plans Fluid Call calls count against plan minutes.

International Roaming: International cellular roaming is not available. RingPlus phones can make calls to the US and Canada from anywhere in the world using FluidCall over WiFi.

Coverage: RingPlus uses the Sprint native network. MemberPlus subscribers can enable extra cost voice and data roaming and free text roaming other CDMA networks, mostly on regional operators but also on Verizon is some areas.

Devices: RingPlus can activate most inactive Sprint postpaid phones as well as the unlocked or Verizon iPhone 6s, 6s+, 6, 6+; the Nexus 5, 5X, 6 or 6P from T-Mobile, Verizon, or ATT; and the Verizon iPhone 5s or 5c.

Although not officially supported, brand new, never activated Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Sprint Prepaid phones usually, but not always, can be activated on RingPlus. Check the seller’s return policies before buying a prepaid phone for use on RingPlus. Enter the phone’s MEID (on a label on the outside of the phone packaging) on the RingPlus Device Check Page to see if your phone can be activated on RingPlus.

RingPlus sells compatible new and refurbished Android, iOS and feature phones at store.ringplus.net

How to Activate:
Click here to activate online and choose a plan. After activating online:

If your phone is brand new turn it on and off and allow the Hands Free Activation process to complete.

If your phone is used perform a network reset to wipe out the previous network settings and prepare the phone for activation. To perform a network reset:

  • iPhone and iPad: Open the dialer and dial ##UPDATE## (##873283#) and tap Call.
  • Most Android phones and feature phones: Open the dialer and dial ##SCRTN# (##72786#) – if prompted for your passcode enter your phone’s six digit MSL which can be found in the Your Device section of your my.ringplus.net account page. After performing a network reset the phone will restart and run Hands Free Activation to complete the activation process
  • Google Nexus Phones: Open the dialer and dial *#*#72786#*#* – if prompted for your passcode enter your phone’s six digit MSL which can be found in the Your Device section of your my.ringplus.net account page. After performing a network reset the phone will restart and run Hands Free Activation to complete the activation process
  • Virgin Mobile Android and feature phones: If ##72786# doesn’t work to bring up the network reset prompt, dial ##VIRGIN# (##873283#) and choose Edit. If prompted for your passcode enter your phone’s six digit MSL which can be found in the Your Device section of your my.ringplus.net account page. Change the MDN to 0000001234 and the MSID to 0000005678. The restart the phone and Handsfree activation should run. If it doesn’t click or tap the Activate Phone option on the home screen.

Payment Options: The only payment method is auto pay using a credit or debit card.

Account expiration: paid plans automatically renew every month with the plan price and applicable taxes charged to your credit or debit card. On all plans, if your account balance reaches zero you card will automatically charged your plan’s auto top up amount. If charges are declined service will be suspended.

Account Management: RingPlus provides a very good online account management portal with detailed call, messaging and data use records at my.ringplus.net. It lets you change plans and add or remove optional features from your plan. There’s a free Call Filter that lets you block unwanted calls from specific numbers or only allow the phone to call certain numbers.

Tethering and hotspot: Tethering (using phone as a modem for a laptop or other device) is only officially allowed on some plans and with most plans carries an extra monthly charge. Check the Buy Add Ons section of your my.ringplus.net account page for availability and pricing.

Call Forwarding, Call Waiting and 3-Way Calling:

Call forwarding:
Not supported

Call waiting: Call waiting is enabled by default. It lets you place one call on hold while you take another call. When you are on a call and have another incoming call, you will hear a short tone. You’ll have approximately 30 seconds to answer before the second caller hears a standard message or is forwarded to voicemail.

To answer Call Waiting: To put the first call on hold, press the on screen call button. You’ll automatically be connected with the second call. To return to the first call, press the call button again. To switch between the two calls, press the call button.

3-Way Calling: Lets you create a conference call between yourself and two other people.

  • While on the first call, tap the “Add call” on screen button and dial the 10-digit number of the second person. The first person is automatically put on hold while the call is made.
  • When the 2nd person answers, press “Merge call” to create the conference call.

“Secret” Codes:
##786# (most phones) displays the phone’s phone number, MSID, ESN, MEID, PRL, call and data counters and version numbers.

Free information services calls
911 – Emergency services

RingPlus Quirks:

  • RingPlus’ plans are ad sponsored. Customers hear ads in place of the usual ringing tone before a call is answered. When a user hears an offer of interest to them they can press the five key on their phone and get a text message containing a coupon or additional information.
  • RingPlus calls use traditional cellular voice, not VOIP, so call quality is similar to that of Sprint. However, the ad injection makes RingPlus’ call routing different than Sprint’s and many users report increased latency (delay). Intermittent issues with DTMF (touch tones) not working or calls not going through have been reported by a number of users.
  • No telephone support: There’s no phone number to call for customer support. Email support is available but reported to be extremely slow. To open a support ticket use this form on the RingPlus Webste. RingPlus will reply via email eventually. There’s also an extensive help Knowledge Base on the site and an active customer forum.

Customer Service:

Phone support: None
Online email support form: support.ringplus.net/support/tickets/new
Community Support Forum: social.ringplus.net/categories/community
Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Google+

Phone Sales and General Information Web Site: ringplus.net/

RingPlus Pros: Free phone service, detailed online usage records, ability to block unwanted calls by phone number.
RingPlus Cons: high taxes, very limited support options, support is slow to respond, calling latency issues.

Netflix Clears Why Content on AT&T and Verizon is Throttled

netflix-mobile-streaming

Over the past few days, there have been reports of AT&T and Verizon throttling Netflix. The claim was originally made by T-Mobile CEO John Legere, which led a number of news outlets to pick up the story. In response to this claim, the two carriers were quick to deny any Netflix content throttling on their end. With their response, Legere has been put on a tight corner as it seemed like he obtained misinformation from his source. Taking a deeper look at it though, the situation is a bit more complex. While what Legere said was technically true, it still doesn’t mean the two carriers were throttling Netflix content. Just take a look at this deeper analysis into the situation.

So does AT&T and Verizon throttle content from Netflix at all?

In the most basic sense of the word, no. Both AT&T and Verizon are not taking any active role on how Netflix content is delivered to their mobile networks. When Legere made his claim on the issue, he said that:

And the duopoly is actually delivering your Netflix content at 360p. I’ll bet you didn’t know that. Go check; it’s true.

AT&T and Verizon have denied actively throttling content to their users. In fact, they haven’t been doing anything to affect how content from Netflix is delivered.

medianet_width=’300′; medianet_height= ‘250’; medianet_crid=’624313955′;

That brings us to the next question: then who is throttling Netflix content at 360p on AT&T and Verizon?

Ever since this hullabaloo broke, Netflix has admitted that it is partly to blame for streaming content at low speeds. The reason behind this was because they believed that the two networks were no longer offering unlimited data plans to their customers.

An official statement from Netflix states that:

We believe restrictive data caps are bad for consumers and the Internet in general, creating a dilemma for those who increasingly rely on their mobile devices for entertainment, work and more. So in an effort to protect our members from overage charges when they exceed mobile data caps, our default bitrate for viewing over mobile networks has  been capped globally at 600 kilobits per second.

Based on the statement released by Netflix, subscribers under AT&T and Verizon will only see 600Kbps stream quality caps on Netflix, which is why video content is streamed at 360p.

How about on other carriers?

When asked about throttling to other carriers, Netflix says that it does follow the same video quality cap on either Sprint or T-Mobile. The reason behind this is because Netflix considers these two companies to have a more consumer-friendly policy when it comes to mobile data caps, referring to the unlimited data plans offered  by the carriers.

So does this mean Netflix will continue throttling content on AT&T and Verizon customers?

Technically, Netflix says no. They are currently working on a mobile data saver toggle for their Android app. When the toggle is already available, Netflix will no longer throttle content based on network. Netflix promises that this new data saver feature will give their users more control on how they want to use their data when using their mobile device to stream content. The toggle will allow them to stream more video on a smaller data plan or opt to increase their video quality if they already have a higher data plan. The data saver toggle is set to roll out to devices sometime in May so this means that before it gets released, subscribers on AT&T and Verizon may still experience 360p as the maximum video quality for streaming Netflix content on their devices.

AT&T GoPhone Adds the Apple iPhone SE to Device Lineup

apple-iphone-se

A few days ago, Apple unleashed their latest smartphone, the iPhone SE. With their announcement, carriers have also started to add the device to their device lineup. So far, only the major carriers have announced that the device will be available with their plans. Today, however, AT&T’s prepaid brand GoPhone has confirmed availability of the iPhone SE on their prepaid phone lineup; making them the first prepaid brand to carry what Apple claims to be “the most powerful 4-inch phone ever.”

medianet_width=’300′; medianet_height= ‘250’; medianet_crid=’624313955′;

Compared to their previous devices, Apple released the iPhone SE as a smaller and cheaper smartphone. Its main selling point is its 4-inch Retina display with a LED-backlit IPS LCD screen and a resolution of 640×1136 pixels. Despite its small display size, the iPhone SE comes packed with a powerful Apple A9 dual-core 1.84 GHz Twister processor with 2GB of RAM and an internal storage option of either a 16GB or 64GB model. On the back, there is a 12MP camera with dual-LED flash and 4K video recording. The front is home to a 1.2MP camera with 720p HD video recording as well. Battery-wise, the iPhone SE sports a non-removable Li-Po 1,642 mAh battery that helps it last up to 14 hours of talk time and 240 hours of standby time. For connectivity, the device is built with 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi, USB 2.0, GPS, and NFC for Apple Pay only. Upon release, the iPhone SE runs on the latest iOS 9.3 OS. It comes with a color choice of Space Gray, Rose Gold, Silver, and Gold.

With its availability on AT&T GoPhone, the iPhone SE may be ordered for $399.99 (for the 16GB model) and $499.99 (for the 64GB model). The device may then be paired with any of the prepaid plans offered by AT&T GoPhone.

  • $30/month – comes with unlimited talk, text, international messaging to over 100 countries and WiFi access while cellular high speed data can be added for $5 per month – 100MB.
  • $45/month – comes with unlimited talk, text and data with first 2GB at high speeds plus unlimited messaging to over 100 countries.
  • $60/month  comes with unlimited talk, text and data with first 5GB at high speeds, unlimited messaging to over 100 countries, and unlimited talk and text from the U.S. to Mexico and Canada.

The $45 and $60 monthly plans may be enrolled in auto pay for a $5 monthly discount. Rollover data may also be used but only for a 30-day period. Once the monthly data allotment has been used up, any added data add-ons will be used before the rolled over data. After which, GoPhone throttles data speeds to 128Kbps until the next billing cycle. Add-ons available are 500MB for $10 ($45 plan) and 1GB for $10 ($60 plan).

The iPhone SE will start shipping on March 30, 2016. It’s important to note that while these prices for the iPhone SE are locked to AT&T GoPhone, Apple sells unlocked models of the iPhone SE at the same prices.

“Rules of the road” for all RingPlus Free plans:

  • Must make an outgoing call at least once every 60 days.
  • Only one free plan per physical user, multiple free lines on the same account are OK as long as used by different people.

Switching plans:

If you are a current RingPlus user here’s how to switch plans.

  • Log in to your RingPlus Dashboard.
  • Click the box in the top right that lists the phone and phone number you want to switch plans on.
  • Click Upgrade Plan (under Account Settings)
  • Click Select this Plan for the plan you want to switch to.
  • If you are upgrading from one free plan to another free plan you must choose the upgrade at “Next Billing Cycle” option, immediate changes between free plans are not permitted.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Change My Plan.
  • If you are doing the upgrade in a phone browser there’s a dialog box asking you to confirm the upgrade that pops up off screen. You must scroll around to find and click on the dialog or the upgrade will not happen. This is not an issue if you use a PC.
  • The most confusing thing for me is that if you are upgrading to take effect at the next billing cycle, there’s no confirmation that the upgrade succeed. After confirming the upgrade you are taken back to a screen showing your old pre-upgrade plan with no indication that you have a pending upgrade scheduled. To confirm the upgrade you have to go back to your main Dashboard page where you should see a message like “You changed SAMSUNG DEVICE’s plan to VIP Pepper, which will be become active on September 3, 2015″.

Supported Phones:

RingPlus can activate most inactive Sprint postpaid phones as well as the unlocked iPhone 6s, 6s+, 6, 6+, or Nexus 5, 5X, 6 or 6P from T-Mobile, Verizon, or ATT; and the Verizon iPhone 5s or 5c.

Although not officially supported, brand new, never activated Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Sprint Prepaid phones usually, but not always, work. Check the seller’s return policies before buying a prepaid phone for use on RingPlus. Enter the phone’s MEID (on a label on the outside of the phone packaging) on the RingPlus Device Check Page to see if your phone can be activated on RingPlus.

Tethering (on plans that include it) generally only works “out of the box” with postpaid Sprint phones and prepaid phones that have a Hotspot menu item.

RingPlus Quirks:

RingPlus’ plans are ad sponsored. Customers hear ads in place of the usual ringing tone before a call is answered. When a user hears an offer of interest to them they can press the five key on their phone and get a text message or an email containing a coupon or additional information.

RingPlus calls use traditional cellular voice, not VOIP so call quality is similar to that of Sprint. However, the ad injection makes RingPlus’ call routing different than Sprint’s and many users report increased latency (delay).
